Metro Woodcarving Weekend Class Description – 2019
A) Three Kolrosing Maura Corey Cloquet, MN
1) A series of simple line designs on practice boards. 2) A project bit more complex design on a decorative piece of basswood, insertion of a clock mechanism 3) A project will be the completion of a design on a basswood plate or a piece of basswood with bark trim. Supply cost on day of class: $15.00 – $25.00. Materials needed to purchase prior to attending workshop: Kolrosing Knife: $27.00 at pinewoodforge.com. Additional materials students may want to bring from home: tracing paper, graphite transfer paper, scotch tape, eraser, pencil, stylus, clipboard, acrylic paints, paintbrush and sandpaper. B) Laid-Back Frog Al Gerads Rice, MN
Al will instruct the carving of a fun whimsical laid-back frog. The basswood blank is 2” X 4” X 9” long. You’ll get a blank, eyes and quality instruction for $25.00. Bring your sharp tools, carving club, and enjoy the weekend with fellow carvers. Contact Al Gerads at: al.gerads@gmail.com
C) Wooden Spoons Karen Henderson St. Francis, MN
Beautiful, durable and usable carved spoons from local hardwoods, Buckthorn, Maple, Pin Cherry Lilac, etc. With a knife and a gouge, you can create your own spoon. The wood is carved green (wet). Skill level: All. Blanks $5 – $10.
D) Wolf Bust Lee Eisenschenk St Joseph, MN
Carve a wolf bust 5” tall out of basswood from a bandsaw blank. You will carve to scale then put in the hair detail, you will need a sharp knife, chisels and cut glove. If you need to bring a light for your area. Cost $30 skill intermediate to advanced.

E) Relief Creche in Heart Wes Spadgenske Andover, MN
The project being led by Wes this year will be a pierced relief of the “Nativity”, encircled by a heart. The faces and hands can be as detailed as you desire but look very nice in the “Willow Tree” style, with minimal detail. This will be supported by an open book (Bible) for a base. Tools needed are, a bench knife, and some palm tools, including a “V” tool, all sharpened. Blank cost will be $25.00. Anyone who has taken a beginner class or has some experience is welcome. F) Minnesota Lumber Jack Lee Olson Crystal, MN
This lumberjack is heading back to camp with his head held low and a trudging in his steps after a long day in the woods. Lee will show you how he has got the reputation for carving great expression on his characters. This project will start with a basswood blank about 8” tall. G) Butterflies Mary Kimball Coon Rapids, MN
Butterflies – learn to carve and paint these beautiful butterflies. This class will help you develop your painting skills with your carving. Make these little darlings into pins, refrigerator magnet or attached to a plant stick. Supplies included. Make as many. Skill level: Any. Cost for supplies: $25.00. I) English Professor Don Fischer Cottonwood, MN
Carved from a basswood rough out about 6” X 8” tall. This is a caricature design from a real professor (my cousin) who is an English Professor at Northwestern College. K) Santa Bear Dick Zawacki Northfield, MN
A folk-art style Santa bear is this class’ project. We will focus on anatomical, body posture, add proportions to add realism to the bear. Tool cuts will be used to simulate hair, so no wood-burning is needed. A Christmas item (tree, present, etc.) and be placed in the bears paws. Tools needed: sharp knife and palm gouges. L) Two Common Loons Perry Johs Blaine, MN
This year’s carving project will be two common loons. We will do one with butternut and one with pine. Notice that the pine one still needs painted details (I will have it completed at the workshop weekend). You will finish the butternut loon with a clear polyurethane. This is not a difficult project and is intended for carvers with beginner or intermediate carving skills. The baby loon is sitting on top of a cavity filled with “Potpourri” and we will be the best smelling carving group this weekend. Size of loon is 7 1/2 x 12. General Notes of Importance and Interest
Check in – Saturday, October 5th at 8:00 am. Brief meeting at 8:30 am.
Classes – Start at 9:00 am, end at noon for lunch, resume at 1:00 pm and continues until 5:00 pm Saturday and 4:00 pm Sunday. No class changes may be made without approval of the seminar coordinator. All classes are in the same room. Therefore, there will be no classes that have wood burning or use power tools, because of allergies.
Class assignments – First Come, First Served basis. Earliest postmark on registration ensures getting your choice of class. If all your choices of classes are filled, your check will be returned and you will be notified for cancellation. Classes are limited to 8 students per class.
Notification of class assignments will be sent out in mid-October.
Cancellation – After September 15, 2018 there will be a $20.00 charge for anyone dropping out of the seminar. After September 15, 2018, there will be no refund. If you must cancel, please notify Cecil Harbaugh at 763-421-9207 or charbaugh@q.com.
Courtesy – Be considerate of your instructor’s time so he/she can spend equal time with each student. Horseplay and unsafe behavior will not be tolerated. Your experience and knowledge may be interesting to the class, but during class time please show respect to your instructor and classmates and let your instructor lead the class.
Lunches – Will be provided and are included in the seminar fee.
Lighting – If you want better lighting, bring a lamp along.
Smoking and Alcohol – Smoking is prohibited in the VFW. Alcohol is available in the Lounge. We ask that you refrain from indulging until the carving day is over at 5:00 pm.
