Class Description for the Metro Woodcarvers Weekend
October 13 & 14, 2018
A. Kolrosing – Maura Corey – Cloquet, MN
Workshop will include 2 Kolrosed projects: 1 on practice board, the other on a piece of basswood with bark trim or a round plate. Design choices will be provided along with a description of all supplies needed, fundamentals of design and pattern application; a step-by-step tutorial of the complete Kolrosing process with aspects of combining additional art mediums. Supply cost on day of class: $10.00 – $15.00. B. Wedding Cross – Al Gerads – Rice, MN
This wedding cross carved with interlocking rings signify marriage. Makes a great gift for a wedding or anniversary. The carving can be customized with names and dates with ‘V’ tool or wood burned. The butternut blank measures 9” X 7” X 1 1/2” Bring your sharp tools and carving glove and a bunch hook. Skill level: anyone. Cost for materials $24.00. Contact Al Gerads at: al.gerads@gmail.com
C: Wooden Spoons Karen Henderson St. Francis, MN
Beautiful, durable and usable carved from local hardwoods. With a knife and a gouge, you can create your own spoon. Skill level: All. Blanks $5 – $10
D: Chip Carving – Bill Ness – Sartell, MN
Chip carving. All students will start with a practice board to hone skills, then progress to projects such as coasters, trivets, and jewelry/recipe boxes. If you do not yet have a Chip carving knife, I have samples from most manufacturers to try out before buying. Skill level: beginner to advanced. Cost for materials: $15 plus additional project fees. E. Lady Slippers – Wes Spadgenske – Andover, MN
Students will have their choice of wood for this project. Aromatic red cedar blanks, which are very highly figured and very colorful, beautiful with a clear finish, will be available. Basswood blanks will also be available for those who want to bring their painting material and references. The project is about 9” tall. It will be very possible to complete more than one flower in this class. Tools needed: Sharp knives and palm tools, especially gouges for creating the leaves. A bench hook would be handy. Sandpaper is varying grits will be used to smooth your creations. Skill level: anyone who has completed a beginner class or the equivalent. Class size limited to 12. F. Black Bear – Lee Olson – Crystal, MN
This project is a walking black bear on a rocky base, with his head turned and looking upward. Lee will concentrate on the basic muscles which are mainly hid under his heavy fur coat. He will be of a basswood blank and is 6 inches long 4 in tall and 3” wide. The fur will be done with a V tool and wood burned on your own time at home. You will need palm gouges and a sharp bench knife. Skill level advanced beginner to intermediate. Cost of the blank is $20.00. Contact Lee Olson at: lee.wdcarver@gmail.com
G. Painting with Mary – Mary Kimball – Coon Rapids, MN
Bring a couple carvings that you want to paint. Didn’t know how to start, Mary will guide you through the process. All supplies included. If you have a specialty pieced such as a wildlife carving (or any other carving), please bring a few pictures as a go-by. Skill level: Any. Cost for supplies: $25.00. I. Six Little Bunnies – Don Fischer – Cottonwood, MN

J: Wood Spirit in Bark – Chris Whillock – Faribault, MN

K. Safari Giraffe – Richard Spadgenske – Frazer, MN
Carve a Safari Giraffe out of butternut 8” or 9” high. Bring hand tools or larger if you are used to them. This intermediate project will not be painted (Pattern by permission by Larry Lonstine). Cost $25.00.
L. Great Blue Heron – Perry Johs – Blaine, MN
Emphasis will be in developing a pattern and showing an easy way to transfer the patter. A variety of ways to display the final project will be discussed. Material need will be woodcarving knives, gouges and V-tools. Skill level: beginner to advanced. Cost: $25.00, includes 2 cutouts and a sample pack of Abernet. Contact Perry Johs at: Pcjohs@gmail.com
General Notes of Importance and Interest
Check in – Saturday, October 13th at 8:00 am. Brief meeting at 8:30 am.
Classes – Start at 9:00 am, end at noon for lunch, resume at 1:00 pm and continues until 5:00 pm Saturday and 4:00 pm Sunday. No class changes may be made without approval of the seminar coordinator. All classes are in the same room. Therefore, there will be no classes that have wood burning or use power tools, because of allergies.
Class assignments – First Come, First Served basis. Earliest postmark on registration ensures getting your choice of class. If all your choices of classes are filled, your check will be returned and you will be notified for cancellation. Classes are limited to 8 students per class.
Notification of class assignments will be sent out by late September.
Cancellation – After September 15, 2018 there will be a $20.00 charge for anyone dropping out of the seminar. After October 1st, 2018, there will be no refund. If you must cancel, please notify Cecil Harbaugh at 763-421-9207 or charbaugh@q.com.
Courtesy – Be considerate of your instructor’s time so he/she can spend equal time with each student. Horseplay and unsafe behavior will not be tolerated. Your experience and knowledge may be interesting to the class, but during class time please show respect to your instructor and classmates and let your instructor lead the class.
Lunches – Will be provided and are included in the seminar fee. (Usually a chicken dinner on Saturday and lunch meat dinner on Sunday)
Lighting – If you want better lighting, bring a lamp along.
Smoking and Alcohol – Smoking is prohibited in the VFW. Alcohol is available in the Lounge. We ask that you refrain from indulging until the carving day is over at 5:00 pm.
